your parents tuck you into bed at night.
They let you stay home and bring you soup when you are sick.
They tell you when to go to bed.
What to wear.
What to eat.
And what birthday parties you are allowed to go to.
They drive you everywhere you want to go.
They pick you up from your friends houses.
They tell you they love you and give you a big hug before you go to sleep.
They read you 2 books every night to make you sleepy.
They bring you orange juice in the mornings before school to wake you up.
They go to all of your soccer games and cheer you on, even when you fall down.
They dance with you in the kitchen to your favorite green day song.
You love them more than life itself.
You are afraid to sleep at a friends house,
and you make them pick you up at 2:00 in the morning when you try to sleep at someones house.
You know that they love you.
You spend all of your weekends with them.
You have family dinners.
You play with your sister.
When you are a teenager
you think your parents are controlling and annoying.
You ignore them when they tell you they love you.
You no longer get that morning kiss from your dad.
Instead you get a horrifying shake until you stir.
You don't let them hug you whenever they want to.
They no longer come to all of your soccer games.
Or read to you.
You don't play with your sister, or even talk to her anymore.
And even though she is only 8, you feel like you haven't seen her since she was a baby.
You often eat alone at 9:00 while watching tv.
Weekends are no longer spent together, but you are out with your friends.
When you are a teenager, you don't think about what you are doing before you do it.
You make mistakes that you can't take back.
Things you wish you could do over.
Days and nights you wish you could take back.
You wish you could reconnect with your family.
But now you feel like an outsider.
Unable to get back in.
It's like a clique you can't sit with at the lunch table.
When you are an adult
you are on your own.
You have to pay your own taxes, and your own bills.
Your parents live a while away.
You wish you could go back in time, and live your life again.
Undo all of your regretted moments, and give your younger parents huge hugs.
Tell them you love them, and play a made up game with your sister.
Relive all those moments that made you cry.
All those moments you wanted something you couldn't have.
Relive those moments of freedom, and those moments of love.
But you can't
you have to move on, and fix what happened by saying something.
Talking to the family that has changed so much over the course of your life.
Giving them a hug.
And telling them you love them.
They will be gone one day and you won't get a chance to say "Goodbye, I love you."
